Teachers all over the world are crying, even as this is being written. Why? They’re beyond sad at the thought that the students they send out into the working world cannot communicate their thoughts in an intelligent, sophisticated, and grammatically correct fashion. And you thought the oceans’ water levels were rising because of climate change — well, perhaps, those are actually...
We all remember as little children, whether as girls or boys, likely there was playtime with trucks - lots of trucks and different types of trucks. However, once we reached adulthood, many of us stopped giving them another thought - other than to yell and swear at them on the road because they’re going too slow or too fast or just plain irritating us.
Don’t Look Now But Here Comes IT Again!
No matter how important each of us thinks we are, how irreplaceable (that’s a lie!), there is one group that truly is heads above the rest of us—the all-knowing magicians of the IT department (everyone does know this means Information Technology, right?).
... Help is on the way!
In this very long series of articles (more yet to come), one thing is certain - companies have sooo many moving parts, with one department after another of hard-working, dedicated employees all trying to make it work. What has also become clear is that working in a vacuum, with little awareness of others, isn't a recipe for the best cake in town. To add to the other ingredients...
Sales or How to Sell Florida Swampland
Business is about offering services and making money - that much is obvious. In order to be ‘firing on all cylinders’, companies need to make sure of two things right off the bat: making sure the service/product offered is good and is in demand and that they have someone who can actually...
The Power of Purchasing
As you might imagine, no company can exist without buying “stuff” and the bigger the business, the more “stuff” there is to buy. And make no mistake, it, too, is a very important component in any company. Have you sensed a pattern here yet? You know, like every section is important and without even one, you’re NOT firing on all cylinders.
Finance / Accounting: The Unsung Heroes.
If getting the word out to employees and customers is vital to a company so is having enough money to even operate it. If a company has only been up and running for a short period of time, the challenges might be greater than for a well established one simply because they haven’t yet gone through...
Communication Can Make It or Break It
Whether you own a business, run a business, or are a loyal, hardworking employee, everyone knows that business is all about making money. If we don’t admit that, we’re done here. Having said that, the majority of businesses really do want to provide the best service, product, etc. to their customer. The trick (and there is always a trick) is...
With all the atrociously horrific news from around the world, it’s no surprise that the otherwise astounding Brexit vote and its aftermath have fallen off the radar. It certainly can’t compete with the horrors of mass killings nor should it. However, the United Kingdom’s very dramatic and, in truth, unexpected Brexit results have taken away our collective breath. Why is this, you ask? And, in fact..
Yikes! Workplace relationships and working environment! Wouldn’t it be great if we could say that everyone gets along, no one is pushy, selfish, or inconsiderate and that love just makes the world go round. Unfortunately, that is not the case; the only thing that makes the world go round is inertia (science lesson, anyone?)! So, yes, there has been, is, and will be..
Sales. Everyone has an opinion about selling and salespeople because everyone has had some experience with them; unfortunately, often it isn’t a very flattering opinion. Doesn’t mean they’re right though. A good salesperson has to work incredibly hard to achieve success. Like in any other profession, you can put in a little effort and simply scrape by (although your partner at home might not be happy about Mac ’n Cheese every night) or you can work your fanny off and enjoy that Range Rover or..
You might have noticed that there are thousands upon thousands of self - help books and videos out there claiming to fix everything that ails us - to make us better more loving people, to keep our marriages together, to help dissolve our marriages, to make us smarter, and so on and so on. Guess what? ‘Selling’ self-help books and tutorials are, also, under every rock, around every corner, and even popping up in our dreams. How many different ways can you be separated from you money?
Most people outside the trucking industry likely don’t realize that approx. 70% of goods delivered to us is shipped by truck. Without trucks, we would have an economic crisis (how would we get those gourmet chips, that lovely Napa valley wine, those orders from Amazon?). Supposedly, indications point to a brighter future for the trucking industry but not without very real challenges. Challenges, you say?
If you have been on our roadways lately, you will likely have spent part of your time swearing loudly at other drivers. Our roadways are too congested with vehicles of every type, and with people not paying enough attention to their driving (texting is really, really bad). So bad stuff happens, lots of it. If you are a truck driver, you are at even greater risk than the average driver. Here in Canada, trucks are involved in...
Angela Merkel (Germany), Margaret Thatcher (U.K.), Kim Campbell (Canada), Vaira Vike-Freiberga (Latvia), and Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf (Liberia). Heard of any of them? If not, it’s time you did (no, seriously!) These are just a few past and present female heads of state throughout the world. Some, of course, have been/are better at their jobs than others and not all are equally well liked.
Let us assume that you would rather be successful in business than not. Correct? If you think that’s a ridiculous question to pose then why, oh why, do so many companies go belly up or find that they are losing valuable territory to their competitors? There has to be a reason why more companies fail in their first year of operation than succeed. Well, yes, there is, and if a lack of money is not the reason, then what is?
If you studied George Orwell’s 1984 in school, you will realize that Big Brother is, indeed, watching us. And you should be worried, very worried. If you stop and think for a minute how many times a day you are photographed, possibly thousands of times in one day, you’ll realize just how little privacy you have left and, hey, better not leave the house unless you’re looking your best!
This really isn’t rocket science and, although the Internet is filled with self- help articles and all manner of amazing insights, being a good leader is pretty straightforward. So, no sugar coating here or pretending we have some new breakthrough in personal achievement that will magically transform you. There is no magic pill, only basic common sense behaviours and attitudes about good leadership that are worth the reminder.
Since you already own a trucking company, we will assume have figured out that running a trucking company, in many ways, is no different than running any company; it requires a sound business plan (not one you came up with on a paper napkin), excellent leadership skills (means no yelling at anyone), and forward thinking (being open to new ideas). You do know this, right? Of course you do!
If cash is, indeed, king, then having great cash flow is like ruling the world. Having all the money in the world is of no consequence if you can’t access it or use it. That’s like looking at fish in an aquarium – pretty, but pretty useless. Profit alone is not a strong indicator of success and certainly not of a company’s future success or growth. However, having uninterrupted and unlimited cash flow promotes real and long lasting growth and stability
The world’s worst kept secret might just be that traditional banks really don’t like parting with “their” money. Certainly they are among the least expensive capital sources if you’re searching for a business loan; however, it really does feel like you have to pry the money from the banks first! Let’s face it, to obtain this money means having good cash flow and assets in order to secure the loan.
Small business’s hiring was always one of the drivers of any economy’s recovery or growth. However, capital is required for such hiring and these days it’s not that easy to find quick financing. As a result small businesses and startups have to be creative and think out-of-the-box when looking for funds
